Tomyhoi Peak
HOME

On July 26 I met up with my friend Vince and some of his hiking friends to climb Tomyhoi Peak. I had heard a lot about this peak and was excited to get the opportunity to go, plus Vince's friend had hiked it before to help us to and through the crux (stated as 3rd class, so we were not too concerned regardless). We did not get hiking until around 10 am so it was a late start, but we made good time and the conditions were great. Some snow patches early on but the majority of the hike was clear of snow. The wildflowers were in full bloom and it was vey green and lush. The marmots were out frolicking around and overall it was just a beautiful hike. However, this was no walk in the park; there was a lot of elevation gain and several losses on the way requiring more gain on the way out. The terrain varied a lot and offered outstanding views. We hiked through thick forest, lush meadows, tarns and snowfields, exposed ridged, glacier travel and class 3 scrambling. Something for everyone to enjoy. The summit ridge was well worth the effort, and being able to hike across a glacier (might be more of a snow field at the top) was a real treat. The final ascent of the crux, although it looked intimidating, was easy. Not even sure when we hit the crux. We were even able to down climb facing out the entire way, always a sign that it is not overly challenging (I always turn in and face the rock for anything beyond easy class 3). The hike out was long, but offered new views from different angles. A great hike with great people. Highly recommended.
